UPDATE: 14-day-old baby sustains 2 skull fractures, Mon County woman arrested for abuse
WESTOVER, W.Va (WDTV) - UPDATE (10/15 at 1 p.m.): Court documents have revealed that the 14-day-old infant who deputies say suffered ‘severe’ physical abuse at the hands of Cheyann Reichard, 21, had five broken bones, including two skull fractures, and possible brain injuries.
Deputies said they found clothing and a sheet with the baby’s blood on it at the home during the investigation, as well.
The child’s father told deputies he saw Reichard violently shake the baby back & forth while the baby’s head was unsupported and said that she told him she “knocked” the baby on the head while he was at the store because the baby wouldn’t stop crying.
ORIGINAL (10/15 at 9:30 a.m.): A woman has been arrested for the ‘severe’ abuse of her 14-day-old infant in Monongalia County.
Cheyann Reichard, 21, is accused of violently shaking and injuring the infant, according to the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office.
The investigation was initiated Tuesday after a referral was received by CPS late Monday that the infant had been shaken and injured at an apartment on Dunkard Avenue in Westover.
CPS immediately arranged for the infant to be taken to the hospital for evaluation before taking custody of the child, deputies said. Doctors said the child sustained multiple serious injuries that were non-accidental and could not have been sustained during childbirth.
The child’s father accused Reichard of the abuse.
After a search of the Westover home, deputies say they recovered multiple pieces of evidence that supported the medical findings and arrested Reichard.
Deputies said the child’s injuries are consistent with a case of severe physical abuse.
Reichard is charged with child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury and is currently in the North Central Regional Jail with no bond set.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
