Thousands of air conditioners recalled due to fire, burn risks as heat wave continues
(Gray News) - Thousands of air conditioners are under recall due to the risk of fire or burn injury.
About 13,514 Amana Window-Room-Air-Conditioners (WRAC) and Through the Wall (TTW) air conditioners or heat pumps were included in the recall, which was issued on June 25.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the heating element in the affected units could remain energized during a ground fault, even when turned off.
The affected units were sold from April to Dec. 2025 for costs ranging between $850 and $1,500. Anyone with a recalled unit should call Daikin Comfort Technologies Manufacturing and request a refund.
No injuries have been reported, but DCT reportedly had one instance of plastic on an affected unit melting.
The recall comes as half of the country grapples with deadly heat.
Matha Irene Van Egmond died in Mississippi after she and her husband fell in the garden and lay in the hot sun for more than three hours.
The National Weather Service stated the dangerous heatwave would last through the end of the week along the Central and Eastern parts of the country, while critical fire conditions would persist through parts of the Four Corners.
Peak heat indices could reach up to 115 degrees, NWS staff estimated.
