WVU leaders outline new era for university President highlights student success, academics and research
MORGANTOWN, W.Va (WDTV) - West Virginia University President Michael Benson says the university is ready to turn its potential into measurable progress, with a focus on student success, academics and research.
Benson made the comments during his second State of the University address.
Benson highlights growth
Benson said the university’s influence extends beyond campus and plays a central role across the state.
He also highlighted the WVU College of Law’s first-year class of 123 students, the largest since 2012.
“In so many ways, we’re the cultural, intellectual, athletic epicenter of the entire county, and this part of the state, and for that matter, the entire state. So, really excited to be at the university and for the times ahead,” Benson said.
New admissions program planned
One of the next steps is WVU Express, a direct admission pilot program for qualifying high school seniors in Monongalia and Kanawha counties.
Provost Beverly Wendland said those plans include modernizing curriculum while ensuring every degree program meets a high standard.
“We must maintain a relentless focus on quality. Whether a student is pursuing an undergraduate degree, professional preparation, or graduate education, the experience should be rigorous, relevant, and worthy of the West Virginia University name,” Wendland said.
University leaders say their other priorities include educational innovation, academic modernization and research excellence.
