PARSONS, W.Va (WDTV) - Tucker County marked America’s 250th anniversary Wednesday with a daylong block party on Walnut and Second streets, sponsored by the Tucker County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The America’s 250th Main Street Celebration began at 10 a.m. with a welcome from Tucker County Commission President Mike Rosenau. The event, part of a $5,000 grant that also funded an America250 mural, offered free hot dogs and family activities.

Community focus drives the event

Tucker County Clerk Lisa Gothelf said the commission’s goal is to bring residents across the county together.

“The commission loves to collaborate and bring the community together because the commission, though it is in Parsons, is the Tucker County Commission,” Gothelf said. “So, we really want to bring the entire community together. And that is our goal. We will have future other events for the America 250. We have a proclamation that it is for the whole year, not just the 4th of July.”

Courthouse tours and walking history

The historic Tucker County Courthouse was open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for self-guided tours. Belva Dilly of the Historical Society hosted a historical walking tour before the event began.

The celebration runs until 6 p.m. and is scheduled to close with a historical re-enactment.
