‘Fireworks on the Hill’ returns to Bridgeport for Independence Day weekend
BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV) - The annual “Fireworks on the Hill” display returned to Bridgeport on July 3 as part of Independence Day weekend traditions in Harrison County.
The show was visible from anywhere along Route 50 West in Bridgeport.
A decades-long tradition
The Bridgeport Hill fireworks display dates back more than 40 years to when the Hills Department Store was in business. When Hills closed, the show ended.
The display was revived in 2014 and ran through 2019 before pausing during the COVID pandemic. It returned in 2023.
Residents return year after year
Many area children have attended the event consistently over the years. Colin Gillespie, a Lumberport resident, said the experience changes with each visit.
“For three years, the first time, it was really exciting. The second time, it wasn’t exciting, but it’s because you’ve been here multiple times. But I’m excited to be here. Hopefully, we have a good time. Nobody gets hurt,” Gillespie said.
Organizers chose July 3 to give residents a chance to enjoy other displays and host their own Independence Day celebrations.
